Andre Ayew
Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has indicated that a possible return of Andr Ayew to the Black Stars for the 2026 FIFA World Cup would not be unexpected, although he emphasised that the final decision lies solely with the teams technical handlers.
Ayew has been absent from the national setup since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cte dIvoire, where Ghana exited at the group stage. His continued exclusion has fueled debate, particularly after his recent return to club football in Europe.
The 36-year-old forward joined NAC Breda after a six-month spell without a club following his departure from Le Havre AC. His move has revived discussions about a potential recall ahead of the next World Cup.
Speaking to Graphic Sports, Adams acknowledged the public discourse but made it clear he would not interfere in selection matters.
Fortunately, Im the minister. Unfortunately, Im not the coach. The coach has a final say on this; If they include him, why not? I wont be surprised,” he said.
Ayew was left out of Ghanas squad for this months international friendlies against Austria and Germany, a decision that has further intensified scrutiny over his role in the team.
Since signing for NAC Breda as a free agent, the former Black Stars captain has made 11 appearances, scoring once. Despite modest returns, sections of the fanbase continue to back his reintegration, citing his vast experience and leadership qualities.
Ayew remains Ghanas most capped player and has been a pivotal figure for more than a decade, featuring prominently in multiple AFCON tournaments and representing the country on footballs biggest stage at the FIFA World Cup.
