Sekondi-Takoradi is full of excitement and anticipation as the over 30 masquerade groups gear up to showcase their craft.
This is one activity that sets the twin city aside from the rest during Christmas. This year, the groups are reporting of massive increases in membership as more people sign up for the carnivals.
Sekondi-Takoradi has become a top tourist destination in the country, thanks to its vibrant masquerade carnivals and accompanying attractions during Christmas and New Year celebrations. This year’s festivities promise to be just as exciting, with the masquerade groups competing to showcase their talents.
Interacting with some of them, one notable trend is the increases in their membership.
“This is that time of the year when everyone knows that the Ankos or masquerade carnival is happening in Taadi. Thousands of people travel from far and near to experience the excitement in Takoradi. The group I belong to is supreme, and our numbers have increased significantly this year – from around 4,300 last year to almost 4,800 plus this year. It’s crazy! The whole town is buzzing, and if you’re not here, you’re definitely missing out!”
Much goes into the creation of their unique costumes which are changed every year. Because of the competitiveness in being the best, everything regarding each group’s costume is done secretly until they are formally unveiled.
“When it comes to fashion lines, our Unique Group stands out from the rest. Just look at the intricate patterns, the vibrant colors, and the meticulous work that goes into creating our outfits. Among all the masquerade groups, I confidently say that ours are the best – just see for yourself,” he said.
In related development Preparations are in full swing for the Western Side Carnival, and Henry Yeleduor, the Western Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, has given assurance that robust security measures will be in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
“As you’re aware, most of the festive activities are underway, with the Tadi Fest officially kicking off today. Meanwhile, the Western Side Carnival will commence tomorrow. Currently, you can see various masquerade groups actively participating in their respective carnivals.”
“Regarding security preparedness, I’d like to assure the general public that the security services, led by the Ghana Police Service, have intensified security measures within the town. You may have noticed that some roads have been temporarily blocked, but we’ve designated alternative routes for the public’s convenience.”
“As we head into the evening, you can expect a visible police presence at all event locations, ensuring a safe environment for all visitors. Your safety is our top priority, and we’re committed to making this year’s festivities enjoyable and incident-free.”
Meanwhile, preparations are feverishly underway for the over 30 masquerade groups to showcase their craft through their unique costumes, dance craft and brass band music. Once again, Taadi is the place to be this bronya. Tiitii is the bronya sound.
