At least seven people have died and two others are missing after a boat capsized on the Volta Lake in the East Gonja District of the Savannah Region.
The tragic incident occurred around 5:30 pm on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, between Sikakope and Mataiko along the Yeji to Congo route.
According to preliminary reports, the boat was carrying 14 passengers when it capsized due to bad weather conditions.
Of the 14 people on board, seven have been confirmed dead — two women and five children — while five males were rescued alive.
Rescue teams have so far recovered the seven bodies, but one woman and one child remain missing.
Investigations indicate that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident, a factor believed to have contributed to the high casualty rate.
Search and rescue operations are still ongoing, with local emergency services and volunteers continuing efforts to locate the two missing persons.
The East Gonja District Assembly and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have been mobilised to support the affected families and coordinate the rescue mission.
