Nineteen polling stations in Ghana’s Ablekuma North constituency will hold a parliamentary rerun on July 11, 2025, after a seven-month impasse left the seat vacant.
The contest pits NPP candidate Nana Akua Afriyie against the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn, with 6,836 voters eligible to participate.
The rerun follows the Electoral Commission’s (EC) failure to declare a winner from December 2024’s general election due to unresolved collation issues.
Initially, the EC cited three disputed polling stations but later ordered fresh elections across 19 stations. The NPP had boycotted the process until a High Court dismissed its injunction application, compelling its participation.
According to the EC, Afriyie held a 48-vote lead before the rerun. The NDC expressed confidence in victory, citing its governance record under President Mahama’s administration, while Afriyie maintained she secured a legitimate win in December and would prevail again.
Electoral Commission Deputy Chair Dr. Bossman Asare confirmed all preparations for a “fair, transparent, and credible” process, emphasizing the need to restore parliamentary representation. Security agencies and party officials have pledged cooperation to ensure order.
