Ghanaian national Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, was on Monday, December 23, 2025, arraigned before the Gbese District Court in Accra under heavy security following his arrest over an alleged $8 million international romance scam targeting elderly Americans.
The alleged scam, which reportedly defrauded victims of millions of dollars, has attracted global attention due to its масштаb and the involvement of United States federal authorities.
Kumi, 34, was arrested on December 11, 2025, after a joint operation involving Ghanaian law enforcement agencies and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
According to U.S. authorities, he faces multiple charges, including wire fraud and money laundering. A federal grand jury in the Northern District of Ohio has indicted Kumi for allegedly orchestrating a series of deceptive online romance schemes aimed at exploiting vulnerable elderly individuals since 2023.
