In a grand ceremony held in Accra on December 30, 2024, Ghana’s outgoing Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was honored with the prestigious Order of the Star of Ghana – Officer Award by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. This accolade, Ghana’s highest national honor, was awarded in recognition of Dr. Bawumia’s exceptional leadership, dedication, and remarkable contributions to national development over the past eight years.
The event, part of the 2024 National Honours and Awards, celebrated outstanding Ghanaians from various fields, including civil service, military, police, judiciary, education, public health, sports, culture, commerce, and agriculture. Dr. Bawumia, who recently contested the 2024 presidential elections as the New Patriotic Party’s candidate, was among the top honorees.
In his remarks, President Akufo-Addo commended the awardees for their pivotal roles in advancing Ghana’s development. He lauded Dr. Bawumia for spearheading transformative digitalization efforts that have modernized key sectors of the economy.
Also honored was Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Dr. Bawumia’s running mate in the elections, who received the Order of the Volta – Officer Award for his distinguished contributions to public service.
The ceremony was attended by notable dignitaries, including Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, Ministers of State, and other high-ranking officials.
Established in 1960, the National Honours and Awards program recognizes and celebrates the creativity, innovation, and hard work of Ghanaians who have significantly contributed to the nation’s progress. This year’s ceremony highlighted the enduring commitment to service and excellence that continues to drive Ghana forward.
