American singer-songwriter and chef, Kelis Rogers, popularly known as Kelis, has expressed her heartfelt condolences to victims of the recent fire at the Kantamanto Market, which destroyed over 7,000 shops on January 2, 2025.
The devastating fire ravaged the iconic market, a bustling hub of commerce and culture, leaving traders to salvage the remains of their stalls. Many vendors lost their life savings in the blaze, which dealt a heavy blow to livelihoods and businesses.
In a heartfelt post on her social media platforms, seen by Ghanaweekend.com, Kelis reflected on her personal connection to the market, writing, “Market fashion today is dedicated to The Kantamanto Market in the capital Accra. I spent hours shopping there, and seeing the devastation hurts my heart, knowing what the people have lost in the fire. The historical importance of this place will never change, but it’s sad that this happened, especially while California has also faced such horrible fires. I shot this video before any of this happened. My love and prayers go out to the people affected by these fires. The fabrics and crafts at markets around the world are where I always want to be. It’s where you meet the best people and truly experience the culture.”
Kelis, widely known for her hit single Milkshake from her third album, Tasty (2003), has become a cultural ambassador through her love of fashion, food, and travel. Her tribute underscores the significance of Kantamanto Market as more than a commercial space—it is a vibrant cultural landmark.
Her words have resonated with many Ghanaians, further drawing attention to the tragedy and the resilience of those affected.
