A fresh twist has emerged in the simmering chieftaincy dispute in Apremdo, as the Chief of the town, Nana Agya Kwamina XI, is reportedly evading attempts to serve him with court processes over a legal challenge by the Queenmother, Nana Mozu VIII. The case revolves around the funeral arrangements for the late Obaapanyin Nana Afrah, mother of the Queenmother.

Court filings show that Nana Mozu VIII, a leading member of the Royal Abiradze Stool Family, has dragged the Chief to the Takoradi High Court, accusing him of unilaterally fixing dates and planning the burial and final funeral rites without her involvement — a move she says breaches long-respected customary protocols.

However, sources close to the litigation say bailiffs have struggled to formally serve the Chief, who is alleged to be deliberately avoiding service while continuing preparations for the funeral. Despite the pending injunction request, he is said to be determined to go ahead with the event.

The Queenmother argues that the Chief’s conduct undermines stool governance and has the potential to distort sacred royal funeral rites. She insists that per Apremdo custom, burial and final funeral rites must be observed separately, not combined, as she claims the Chief is attempting to do.

She also alleges that funeral invitations have been printed and distributed without her approval, naming someone she maintains is not the legitimate Abusuapanyin, contrary to tradition.

In her affidavit, she describes the Chief’s actions as a “continuing violation of custom” that could cause “irreparable harm” to the Royal Family and the dignity of her late mother. Nana Mozu VIII is therefore seeking a restraining order to halt all funeral preparations until the matter is fully heard.

The injunction application is scheduled for hearing on November 13, 2025, at the Takoradi High Court. The Queenmother has pledged to provide any required undertaking for damages, stressing that her action is solely to protect tradition and preserve stool authority.

As of now, Nana Agya Kwamina XI has made no public comment on the legal challenge — but community sources say preparations for the funeral have not slowed down, setting the stage for a potential showdown between custom and the courts.
