Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Alex Asante has commended former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan for his level of commitment to the national team.

The team’s all-time leading scorer played through pain following a terrible injury at the Black Stars camp as revealed by Alex Asante.

According to him, the former Sunderland striker risked his health and played willingly to ensure a good result was recorded for the Black Stars.

“Asamoah Gyan for me is the most committed player I have ever seen playing for the Black Stars,” Asante told Asempa FM.

“There was a game that Black Stars was supposed to play. Gyan trained with the team and after arriving at the team hotel, his knee suddenly got swollen and the entire players were surprised.

“Dr Baba was the team doctor at the time and he took Gyan to a room and we all could hear Gyan screaming and crying because the team doctors were trying to get him fit for the game and despite the pain, Gyan played the game even though he was not fit.

“Gyan’s commitment and dedication to the national team is something that makes him and for me, he is the most committed player ever to play for the national team,” he added.

Asamoah played in several important tournaments for the Black Stars, and he came within a whisker of winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2010 and 2015.

The former Udinese forward still holds the record for most goals for the Black Stars with 51 in 109 matches. He is also Africa’s leading scorer at the World Cup with six goals in three tournaments.

Gyan last appeared for the Black Stars in the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.
