Asante Kotoko have charged caretaker coach Prince Yaw Owusu to follow in the footsteps of Roberto Di Matteo and end the season on a high.

Owusu has been placed in temporary charge and will be assisted by Mohammed Hamza Obeng following the resignation of Karim Zito.

Zito stepped down after Kotoko were eliminated from the MTN FA Cup by Aduana FC.

The Porcupine Warriors have won just one Premier League match in 2026, leaving them fifth on the table, eight points behind leaders Medeama.

Speaking to Luv FM, the club’s Communications Director, Sarfo Duku, said the interim technical team will be given the opportunity to prove their worth.

“For now, we will allow him to work and see how things unfold,” he said.

“Based on his performance, we will know the next step to take. We expect them to bring their experience, exposure, and knowledge to bear.”

When asked about expectations, Sarfo cited the example of Di Matteo, who took over Chelsea as interim coach and won the UEFA Champions League in 2012.

“Caretaker coaches have good records. The classical example is Di Matteo at Chelsea,” he added.

“Now that they have been given the chance to be at the helm, they should prove to the world that they have something in them.”

Owusu and his team begin their Kotoko stint with the Super Clash against Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Stadium on February 15.
