Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo achieved a personal feat on Tuesday when he surpassed Kobe Bryant to become the second player in NBA history to score the most points in a game.

Adebayo, who was born to an African American mother and a Nigerian father, scored 83 points in the Heat’s 150-129 victory over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night. The 28-year-old made 20 out of 43 shots from the floor and 7 of 22 three-pointers. Adebayo also shot 43 free throws, out of which he made 36.

Adebayo’s history-making night was largely unexpected, as the 3-time NBA All-Star center is averaging 18.9 points per game this season.

Prior to Tuesday’s game, the late Kobe Bryant held the second position for the most points scored in an NBA game after the Hall of Famer scored 81 points in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2006 match against the Toronto Raptors. Adebayo now occupies that position, with NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain still first after over six decades. Then a Philadelphia Warriors player, Chamberlain scored 100 points against the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962.

Following Tuesday’s game, Adebayo, who was a devoted childhood fan of Bryant, touched on his feat and surpassing the deceased Los Angeles Lakers legend.

“To be 83 and passing [Bryant], in my mind, it’s like, what would he say to me? Because I’ve always wanted to have a conversation with him,” Adebayo said, per Al Jazeera. “He’ll probably say, ‘Go do it again.’

“Just a surreal moment being in the company with somebody that you idolised growing up.”

Several NBA superstars, including the league’s all-time leading scorer, LeBron James, reacted to Adebayo’s history-making night on social media.

“BAM BAM BAM ,” James shared on X. Miami Heat legend and Adebayo’s former teammate, Dwayne Wade, also wrote, “83 for Cap”

“I couldn’t believe it when I was hearing about it in real time. He got 30 in the first quarter … Congratulations to Bam. I know how much work he puts in,” Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant said in a post-game interview on Tuesday when he was asked about Adebayo’s 83-point game.

“I looked at the statsheet, and it’s pretty crazy, 40 shots, 40 free throws, 20 threes, that takes a lot of stamina man, that takes a lot of energy to not only go out there to put those shots up, but also make them to set the record to surpass Kobe [Bryant] as the second-highest scorer in the history of the game,” Durant added.
