The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana has described as premature, the ban on export of grains by government.
Government announced an immediate ban on the export of key grains, including maize, rice, and soybean.
This is in response to the ongoing dry spell that has devastated agricultural production in eight regions.
According to the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, this measure will ensure food security within the country.
Mr. Acheampong made this declaration during a press briefing on August 26.
“With immediate effect, the government is placing a ban on the export of grains including maize, rice, and soybean until the situation normalizes,” he said.
But Chief Executive Officer of the Peasant Farmers Association, Dr. Charles Nyaabah said the ban is premature and does not solve the root cause of the matter.
“It is premature to announce a ban, and it will rather put farmers in a risky position. That is what it intends to do. What are the measures in place to ensure ready market and good price internally, so this is like the farmers committing suicide,” he argued.
