Barack Obama has described the White House’s demands for Harvard University to alter its policies or risk losing federal funding as “unlawful” in an X post he made on 15th April.
The former president, who is also a Harvard alumnus, praised Harvard University’s decision to reject the White House’s demands and encouraged other institutions to follow Harvard’s example.
President Donald Trump is withholding over $2 billion (£1.5 billion) in federal funds from Harvard because the university refused to modify its hiring, admissions, and teaching practices, which his administration deemed essential for combating antisemitism on campus.
Many universities in the U.S. receive various forms of federal funding, primarily intended for scientific research, including drug development. On Monday 14th April, Harvard became the first major U.S. university to firmly reject the administration’s demands, accusing the White House of attempting to “control” its community.
