Legendary entertainer Barbra Streisand will be honoured with an Honorary Palme d’Or at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival during the awards ceremony on Saturday, May 23, in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to cinema and global culture. The ceremony will be broadcast live from the famed Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.
The accolade celebrates a career that spans decades across film, music, and stage, cementing Streisand’s place as one of the most influential figures in entertainment history.
Speaking on the honour, Streisand expressed both gratitude and humility.
“It is with a sense of pride and deep humility that I’m honored to join the company of past Honorary Palme d’Or recipients whose work has long inspired me,” she said. “In these challenging times, movies have the ability to open our hearts and minds to stories that reflect our shared humanity.”
A Legendary Career in Film and Music
Streisand’s achievements across the entertainment industry are staggering. As an actress and filmmaker, she has appeared in 19 films and directed three major productions, earning two Academy Awards—including one for her iconic role in Funny Girl.
Her 1977 Oscar for Best Original Song from A Star Is Born (1976 film) made her the first woman to win in that category. She later broke barriers again in 1984 when she became the first woman to win Best Director at the Golden Globes for Yentl.
Beyond film, Streisand has released 37 studio albums, recorded 13 soundtracks, and earned 10 Grammy Awards. She remains the only artist to achieve a number-one album in six consecutive decades, underscoring her lasting impact on the global music industry.
Breaking Barriers Behind the Camera
Streisand’s directing debut, Yentl, stands as a milestone in Hollywood history. Inspired by a story by Isaac Bashevis Singer, the film took nearly two decades to bring to life after Streisand acquired the rights in the early 1960s.
Her determination paid off when the film was finally produced, with Streisand directing, producing, adapting, and starring in the project. The film also marked the first time Hollywood entrusted a woman with such a significant production budget for a major studio film.
She went on to direct additional acclaimed films including The Prince of Tides, which received seven Oscar nominations, and The Mirror Has Two Faces.
From Broadway to Hollywood Stardom
Streisand’s rise began at a remarkably young age. She found success in New York cabarets at 18, conquered Broadway by 20, released her first album at 21, and made her film breakthrough in Funny Girl at 26, earning her first Academy Award.
Her screen career includes celebrated performances in musicals like Hello, Dolly! and A Star Is Born (1976 film), romantic drama classics such as The Way We Were, and comedies including The Owl and the Pussycat and Meet the Fockers.
Festival Director Thierry Frémaux praised Streisand as “a global star and an artist who initiates projects that reflect who she is,” describing her as a “legendary bridge between Broadway and Hollywood.”
A Voice for Social Change
Beyond her artistic achievements, Streisand has also dedicated significant energy to philanthropy and advocacy. Through the Streisand Foundation, established in 1986, she has supported causes ranging from gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights to environmental protection and arts education.
She has also been a passionate advocate for women’s health through the Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Center at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute.
Cannes Welcomes a Hollywood Icon
For the first time in her storied career, Streisand will walk the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, where organisers say they are proud to welcome the legendary “Funny Girl” to the iconic French Riviera event.
As the festival prepares to celebrate her extraordinary legacy, the moment promises to be one of the most memorable highlights of this year’s ceremony.
