Chairman of the Black Meteors management committee, Frederick Acheampong, has confirmed that Black Stars winger Kamaldeen Sulemana will be needed in the team as they prepare for the upcoming U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Having sealed qualification with a 2-1 aggregate win over Algeria in the last round of qualifiers, Ghana has been drawn with hosts Morocco, Congo and Guinea in Group A.
Coach Ibrahim Tanko has named a 22-man squad consisting of only local players but is expected to finalise his squad in the coming days with the inclusion of foreign-based players as well as eligible ones who feature for the Black Stars.
Acheampong asserted that for Ghana to give a good performance at the tournament and eventually secure a place in the next Olympic Games, Kamaldeen Sulemana as well as youngster Ernest Nuamah who are both in the latest Black Stars for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers would be needed.
“We are negotiating with the players and the Black Stars technical team to see if most of them will be available. In any case, the Black Stars game is on the 18th so after that those who are available can join us”, he told Graphic Sports.
“Kudus is not eligible because he was born in the year 2000 but there are other players in the Black Stars like Kamaldeen and Nuamah who would be needed in the Black Meteors”, he stated.
The tournament kicks off on June 24 and will end on July 8, 2023.
