The Black Queens of Ghana are set to play their final group game in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) today at 7 pm GMT against Tanzania, a match that could determine their fate in the tournament. After a challenging start, with a 2-0 loss to defending champions South Africa and a 1-1 draw against Mali, the Queens sit at the bottom of Group C, level on one point with Tanzania. This game represents a vital opportunity for Ghana to secure their place in the knockout stages.
Ghana’s campaign began with high hopes but was quickly tested by a strong South African side that edged them out 2-0. Despite dominating parts of the match and creating numerous chances, ncluding shots from Alice Kusi and Evelyn Badu hitting the crossbar, the Queens could not convert their efforts into goals.
The subsequent draw with Mali, a team they were favored to beat, intensified the pressure on Ghana, leaving their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
The group standings reflect the tense competition: South Africa leads with four points, Mali follows closely with four points, while Ghana and Tanzania are tied with one point each. With only the top two teams and the best two third-placed teams advancing, Ghana must win today’s match to keep their tournament dreams alive.
Failure to do so will likely end their campaign prematurely, underscoring the high stakes of this encounter.
