The Catholic Bishops of Ghana have expressed deep concern over the violence and unrest that have erupted after the 2024 general election. They have therefore condemned the acts of violence, rioting, and looting that have disrupted peace and stability in some parts of the country.
A statement by the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, said such actions are unacceptable and contradict the core values of peace, unity, and respect for life that the nation holds dear. It is therefore calling for an immediate cessation of all violent activities and urged all Ghanaians to uphold the peace that has been a hallmark of the country’s democratic process.
The Conference has appealed to political party leaders to exercise responsible leadership at this critical time. It said their roles as leaders go beyond seeking power as it involves guiding their followers with wisdom, promoting peace, and ensuring the well-being of every Ghanaian.
It also urged the Ghana Police and other security services to remain vigilant and professional, asking them to deal more decisively with all those involved in the mayhem, treating them as criminals regardless of party affiliations.
