Ghana’s Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has joined a nation in grief following Wednesday’s military helicopter crash that killed eight people.

The tragedy struck near Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region as officials traveled to launch an anti-illegal mining initiative in Obuasi.

Among the dead were Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, whose Tamale home former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia visited just days earlier. Also lost were Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, senior ruling NDC figure Samuel Aboagye, and three military personnel.

CDD-Ghana’s August 8 statement extended condolences to bereaved families while urging media restraint. “This national tragedy should strengthen Ghana’s resolve against illegal mining,” it emphasized, backing calls for a full investigation. The group acknowledged the shared loss felt by President John Mahama’s government, the military, and the opposition NPP.

Ghana observes three days of national mourning, including Thursday’s wreath-laying at the Presidency. A vigil honors victims today, August 9. Meanwhile, remains have been flown to South Africa for DNA identification ahead of burials. As flags fly at half-mast, you could feel the nation holding its breath for answers—and healing.
