Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has re-emerged in the public sphere following his release from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), where he had been held over ongoing investigations into alleged financial misconduct.
In a video currently making the rounds on social media and sighted by GhanaWeekend, Chairman Wontumi appeared calm and composed as he interacted warmly with a female supporter he fondly described as his campaign manager.
With a sachet of water in hand, taking sips and a relaxed demeanour, he seemed unshaken by the recent legal turbulence that has gripped his political career.
The high profile NPP figure looked upbeat as he resumed his familiar role of energising the party’s grassroots in the Ashanti Region.
The woman in the video, visibly thrilled to see him back in action, voiced her unwavering confidence in his ability to steer the party back to electoral victory in 2028, following the NPP’s crushing defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, by EOCO on charges including money laundering, a case that has since sparked national attention and internal unrest within the party.
His detention triggered a wave of demonstrations by party stalwarts and followers, who mounted intense pressure on authorities to grant him bail.
After several days in EOCO’s custody, he was released after meeting his GH₵50 million bail and two sureties conditions on Monday June 2.
