Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has backed his side to cope with the mounting pressure of the Kenyan Premier League title race after a commanding weekend victory strengthened their grip at the top.
K’Ogalo delivered a dominant 3-0 win over KCB FC at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, restoring a six-point lead over second-placed AFC Leopards, who have a game in hand.
Speaking after the match, Akonnor expressed confidence in the squad’s development, noting significant improvement compared to earlier in the campaign.
“If you looked at it some four, five months ago, we would be a little bit worried, but now we are very confident of how the players possess things and how they play,” the former Ghana coach said.
The performance against KCB underlined that progress, with Gor Mahia combining intensity off the ball with composure in possession and clinical finishing in attack.
However, the title race remains finely poised with five key fixtures remaining. Gor Mahia are set to face Posta Rangers FC, Ulinzi Stars FC, Shabana FC, Tusker FC and Kariobangi Sharks FC in the run-in.
Despite the challenges ahead, Akonnor’s remarks signal a growing belief within the camp that Gor Mahia have the resilience and quality to go all the way.
