Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), Kofi Kapito, has criticised what he describes as needless political interference in the use of completed public facilities. Speaking on GBC’s Current Agenda, Mr. Kapito expressed anger over the decision to abandon the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) project that was reportedly 90 percent complete, simply because of political differences.

“Sometimes complaints drag on because no one takes responsibility. When the UGMC was 90% completed, we refused to use… I’m angry as I can be, because lives were at stake,” he said.

He explained that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the health facility despite being almost ready, was left idle until external pressure forced authorities to put it to use. According to him, such delays put countless lives at risk unnecessarily.

“I could die at any time, not because of my health, but because somebody played politics with a hospital. That is unacceptable,” Kapito lamented.

He further cited instances where institutions, including the University of Ghana, only began making use of certain completed facilities after public outrage, arguing that partisan interests must never override the welfare of citizens.

Mr. Kapito’s comments reflect growing frustration among civil society groups about stalled or underutiliSed public projects across the country, often attributed to political transitions.
