In the buildup to the 2024 general elections communicators of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) convinced many Ghanaians, especially religious leaders and custodians of our social norms to believe that the Akufo-Addo government was pro-LGBTQ and had no political will to sign the anti-LGBTQ Bill into law.
The NDC communicators then tactically presented themselves as God-fearing alternatives that had the zeal to outlaw LGBTQ when given power. The propaganda started during the Assin North bye-election when NDC went from church to church and house to house to convince the electorate that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) could not be trusted to outlaw LGBTQ practice in Ghana.
The most vociferous champion of anti-LGBTQ was Sam George, the Member of Parliament of Ningo-Prampram and the current minister of communication. During the period, he toured some African countries to address audiences on the illegality and immorality of LGBTQ practice. He received thunderous applause and international recognition as an erudite speaker against same-sex relationship.
He even surpassed President John Mahama as the chief sponsor of LGBTQ. He boldly stated that he would hold candidate Mahama, now President Mahama responsible he fails to outlaw LGBTQ if he becomes president. In fact, Sam George’s critics had no option than to admire his boldness in denouncing LGBTQ.
Political sophistry
After winning the Assin North bye-election on the back of LGBTQ, NDC MPs and the Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable, Alban Sumana Bagbin sustained the pressure on the NPP government to sign the controversial Bill into law. Whereas there was a case on the Bill pending at the Supreme Court, the Speaker of Parliament argued that the failure of President Akufo-Addo to accent to the Bill amounted to disrespecting the Legislative arm of government.
In fact, they succeeded in turning public opinion against the Akufo-Addo government. During the 2024 elections candidate, John Dramani Mahama trumpeted his readiness to sign the Bill into law if he became President on January 7, 2025. With one year into office, LGBTQ has been dropped from the list of government policy priorities.
LGBTQ curriculum
The new curriculum comprised the redefined concept of sex, sexuality, sextual orientation. sexual rights and gender identity. In response to public pressure NaCCA admitted that the definition of sexuality in the new guide did not reflect Ghanaian culture. If it did not reflect Ghanaian culture, whose interest was it serving? The Minority was therefore right in demanding the withdrawal of all LGBTQ materials smuggled into SHS curriculums.
With public opinion swaying against it, the Minister of Education, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, on January 15, 2025, ordered NaCCA to withdraw the disputed curriculums from the SHSs. He also authorized NaCCA to remove the ambiguities in the biological definition of gender in the curriculums. “There should be no ambiguity in the definition of a man and a woman. For our purpose, the sex of a person at birth holds. That depicts and reflects Ghanaian values and laws”, Mr. Iddrisu stated.
It is curious however, to note that it was after the Minority blew the whistle that NaCCA admitted that the definition of man and woman did not reflect Ghanaian culture. The question is, who reviewed or validated the sexuality guide before it was secretly offloaded to the Ghana Education Service for teaching in secondary schools? Had the Minority not blown the whistle our children would be brainwashed by the very political party that rode to power on the back of LGBTQ.
Upholding morality
Belatedly, the education minister said that our educational materials must align with our national morality and culture. “We want to bring up Ghanaian learners in an environment where they can appreciate that the morality of our society rests on our values”, says Mr. Iddrisu in a face-saving move.
He directed NaCCA to take full responsibility for addressing any inconsistencies. But some stakeholders argue that it is rather the Ministry of education that should take full responsibility because NaCCA could not have unilaterally produced the poisonous LGBTQ manual without the government’s approval.
Therefore, the minister’s change of gear amounts to shifting the blame and avoiding responsibility. This suggests that there was no transparency in the development and distribution of the guide. Obviously, the ministry of education and its agencies NaCCA and GES were hiding something from the public, else, there would have been several stakeholder consultations and launching of the manual before its use.
Key stakeholders in the education of our children include parents, religious leaders, teachers and traditional rulers who are custodians of our cultural norms. From what has transpired I personally think the government cannot be entrusted with the education of our children based on our cultural values and our future aspirations.
In these days when all races are harnessing their culture and indigenous knowledge systems for development and emancipation, it is unimaginable why our leaders are still depending on western worldviews and philosophies for educating our children.
Westernisation
The western attempt to impose their liberal and alternative lifestyles on us is a master plan to indoctrinate and miseducate the current generations of African youth about diverse sexualities.
This is not only wrong, but also against the wisdom of God who created male and female. For this reason, if they succeed through our leaders to indoctrinate and miseducate the current generations that would be the end of Africa’s cultural values and respect for God-ordained human sexualities.
In the next 20 to 30 years the current generations will be the political leaders of this country, who would see nothing wrong with LGBTQ because of indoctrination. They would become law makers and would gladly make laws to affirm and promote same-sex practices.
Several anti- LGBTQ advocates have suggested that the western world have planned to use Ghana as launching pad to reach the rest of Africa. From the era of slave trade to colonialism, Ghana has been an ideological battle ground for western invaders.
Using the castles and forts as trading hubs, several European countries traded in both commodities and humans. It is there not surprising that Ghana has become the centre stage of western plans to impose LGBTQ on Africa. In fact, our current political leaders have become more complicit and supportive of the western agenda, despite riding on it to gain power.
Others have argued that the LGBTQ agenda is driving force of western population control measures in Ghana and Africa. If our young men are marrying other men, if our young ladies are marrying other women, who will give birth to populate the continent? That would be the end of population decline in Africa.
Many European countries are already facing fertility decline and aging populations. I have gathered that one of the Nordic countries recently shut down several basic school facilities for lack of children to enroll. Is that what they want for us?
Leadership
The leadership of the Church of Pentecost has been very outspoken against attempts by any government to make LGBTQ an accepted lifestyle in Ghana. In previous conversations the current Chairman of the church, Apostle Eric Nyamekye described LGBTQ as an insult to the intelligence of God, the creator of man and woman. “We are just telling God he did not think enough”, he emphasized and challenged Ghanaians to close the LGBTQ door now.
According to Apostle Nyamekye, any society where there are no absolutes will soon descend into lawlessness. He reiterated that LGBTQ is not about rights, it is about morality. “If you have any feeling against your current sexuality, you have a problem”, he pointed out.
Similarly, the past chairman of the church, Apostle Opoku Nyina emphasized that in the past it was an abomination for people to discuss same-sex relationship, let alone practicing it. “But we have tolerated it to the point of glorifying it; but this glorification is foolishness”, he pointed out.
He argued that if we allow LGBTQ to become an accepted norm it will destroy humanity. Apostle Nyina explained that Africa’s contribution to humanity should be to civilize the western world on the protection of moral values. “This is the time God is calling all who fear and revere him to mobilise against LGBTQ”, he emphasized.
Power of LGBTQ
The global LGBTQ movement is a powerful advocacy group that is influencing governments, legislatures, civil society and media and journalists to advocate LGBTQ as a right. Several African governments and legislators are under intense pressure from some western countries to make laws to legalise same-sex relationships.
The LGBTQ movement has the financial resources to influence state policy, to direct think thanks and civil society organizations, including mainstream media and traditional journalists to toe their line. Therefore, what is unfolding is not a coincidence; it is an attempt by western powers to conscientize our youth on LGBTQ through educational curriculum. It is obvious that our government is not sincere on the LGBTQ issue, and they could be pushing it for personal gain and not our collective gain.
It is therefore disturbing that major stakeholders like the National House of Chiefs, the Christian Council, the Catholic Bishops Conference, the Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, the Baptist Convention, the Adventist Council and the Ghana Moslem Council have been quiet over the smuggling of LGBTQ content into our secondary school curriculum.
Equally disturbing is the silence of mainstream media and traditional journalists, who are the agenda-setters and watchdogs over society. It appears these institutions have lost the same voices and the same vigour with which they campaigned against LGBTQ under the Akufo-Addo administration. God save Ghana.
