Former Vice President and NPP’s 2028 presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic collapse of a building at Accra New Town that claimed three lives and injured several others.
In a social media post on Sunday, March 29, 2026, Dr Bawumia extended his condolences to the bereaved families, describing the incident as deeply distressing.
“I have received with sadness, news of the tragic building collapse in Accra Newtown this afternoon. The building is said to be a place of Christian worship. May the lives lost painfully rest in peace, and my deepest sympathy goes to the families,” he stated.
He offered prayers for those still affected and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
“I pray that all trapped are brought out safely, and the injured recover swiftly,” he added.
Dr Bawumia also commended the emergency rescue teams for their swift intervention and efforts to save lives.
The incident occurred on Sunday when an uncompleted four-storey under construction at the Accra Newtown Experimental D/A School, reportedly being used as a place of worship, collapsed during a church gathering.
According to emergency services, 23 persons have been retrieved from the debris. Twenty people were successfully rescued and conveyed to various hospitals for treatment, while three others including two females and one male were confirmed dead.
Rescue operations continued into Monday as authorities work to account for all affected persons.
