The Chairperson of the African Women Leaders Network, AWLN, Ghana Chapter, Dr. Charity Binka, has underscored the importance of women’s participation in creating an equitable and inclusive world. She said Africans share a unified vision of a world where women can thrive alongside men.

Dr. Binka was speaking at the award ceremony and fundraising dinner of the African Women Leaders Network in Accra. She highlighted the achievements of women who have contributed to gender equality and women leadership in Ghana. The African Leaders Women Network (AWLN) is a joint initiative of the African Union and the United Nations, established in 2017. The AWLN aims at enhancing women’s leadership across diverse backgrounds for the transformation of the continent.

The AWLN Ghana chapter was launched in November 2022 as the 31st member of the Pan African Network. It has made substantial efforts in mobilising women from distinct backgrounds to lead the transformation of Ghana. Chairperson of the AWLN Ghana Chapter, Dr. Charity Binka, says the organisation is keen on bridging the intergenerational gap between women to ensure sustainability in their work to achieve gender parity.

She said the AWLN awards ceremony is one of the innovations designed by the Ghana branch to commemorate the African Women’s Day celebration worldwide.

Presidential Advisor on Gender and Development at the office of the President, Mrs. Angela Asante, who spoke on behalf of President Akufo-Addo, said the passing of the Affirmative Action Bill will be the President’s legacy to the country.

Some awardees include the Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful; a renowned Paediatric Surgeon, Prof. Afua A.J Hesse; a gender activist and Chief Executive of the Ark Foundation, Dr. Angela Dwanena-Aboagye; and Reverend Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee.
