Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has visited victims of Tuesday’s fatal accident at Amanase near Suhum, where at least 11 passengers lost their lives and 14 others sustained injuries in a tragic road crash.
The Minister, visibly moved by the scenes at the Suhum Government Hospital, extended her heartfelt sympathies to the injured and bereaved families. She also visited the accident scene to gain firsthand insight into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
To support ongoing emergency treatment efforts, the Minister donated GHC5,000 to the hospital for the immediate purchase of essential medication for the injured. “This is a difficult moment for all of us. The government stands with the victims and their families, and we will do everything possible to support them,” she said during the visit.
Hospital officials confirmed that three of the injured, including a pregnant woman, are in critical condition and have been referred to the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua for advanced medical care.
The fatal accident occurred when an empty fuel tanker, reportedly driven by a dozing driver, veered off its lane and collided head-on with a Sprinter bus full of passengers. Eyewitnesses described the impact as horrifying, with bodies strewn along the roadside.
As investigations continue, the Minister called on drivers to exercise caution and rest adequately to prevent avoidable tragedies. “One life lost is one too many. We must prioritize safety on our roads,” she urged.
