The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has urged political stakeholders and the general public to remain patient as the verification of election results is still ongoing. This appeal comes just 24 hours after polls closed.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, December 8, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa assured Ghanaians that the results of the presidential and parliamentary elections will be announced once they are thoroughly verified. She emphasized that the commission is working within a 72-hour timeframe to ensure the accuracy and transparency of the results.
Her remarks followed a call by Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who urged the EC to declare the results promptly. This call came after Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, reportedly conceded defeat.
Jean Mensa stressed the importance of the verification process, which involves all political parties and their agents, to uphold the credibility of the election.
“We ask citizens to exercise patience, as the process is just 24 hours in. This is a meticulous exercise, and we will announce the results if they are ready before the 72-hour mark,” she said.
The EC Chairperson added that, as of now, only results from the Ahafo Region have been received, and work is ongoing to compile results from other regions.
