The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially declared Faustina Akurugu Elikplim of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the Member of Parliament (MP)-elect for the Dome Kwabenya constituency.
This announcement comes after weeks of disputes between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the election results in the constituency.
At an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Tuesday, December 31, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa confirmed the final decision. She stated that the electoral process had been completed successfully and the results truly reflect the will of the people.
“Our responsibility is to ensure that the electoral outcomes represent the people’s choice, and we are confident that this has been achieved,” Mrs. Mensa said.
After a re-collation of results, Faustina Akurugu Elikplim secured 50,967 votes, while the NPP candidate, Mike Oquaye Junior, obtained 50,669 votes.
With this declaration, the previously planned re-run at an outstanding polling station has been cancelled.
This decision marks the end of tensions surrounding the Dome Kwabenya seat, allowing Faustina Akurugu Elikplim to prepare to serve as the constituency’s representative in Parliament.
