Dr. George Domfeh

Development economist Dr. George Domfe has reportedly dismissed claims that religious identity influenced the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 election loss, attributing the outcome instead to prevailing economic hardships.

During a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo programme, the Founding President of Africa Policy Lens stated no evidence supports narratives linking the defeat to former flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s faith.

Dr. Domfe asserted that global economic pressures—including the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine—were primary drivers of voter dissatisfaction. He reportedly emphasized that incumbent governments worldwide faced similar rejections between 2022 and 2024 due to inflation and financial strain, citing historic losses for UK Conservatives and record U.S. inflation during that period.

The economist rejected identity-based explanations, noting 56 governing parties globally lost elections amid these shared challenges. He reportedly linked Donald Trump’s 2024 U.S. victory to the same economic disruptions, framing Ghana’s result as part of a broader pattern rather than local exceptionalism. Under President John Mahama’s current NDC administration, the analysis underscores persistent voter focus on material conditions over cultural narratives.
