A District Magistrate Court in Agona Swedru, Central Region, has issued an injunction blocking Cynthia Morrison from running as an independent candidate for the Agona West parliamentary seat.

This ruling will remain in effect until an ongoing legal case is fully resolved.

Morrison, who previously represented the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2016 and 2020, opted for an independent candidacy after alleging unfair treatment during the party’s internal primary for the 2024 election. She made her announcement about three months ago, following her defeat in the NPP’s parliamentary primary, where she received 152 votes compared to Christopher Arthur’s 240.

Despite her loss, Morrison has emphasized her commitment to the development of Agona West, which motivated her independent bid. With the elections less than two months away, the court’s injunction raises questions about her ability to campaign, as the legal matter may not be resolved in time.

The magistrate’s order prohibits her from campaigning until the case is concluded. Morrison, a former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, has urged her constituents to support her independent efforts, maintaining that her focus remains on the future of Agona West amid these legal and political challenges.
