The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set an ambitious goal of capturing 56% of the votes in the Greater Accra region for the upcoming 2024 elections.

Divine Agorhum, the NPP’s Greater Accra Regional Chairman, outlined this target in an interview with Asaase News, acknowledging the challenges posed by the region’s diverse and cosmopolitan nature.

Agorhum noted that Greater Accra has historically been a key battleground in presidential elections. Although the NPP lost the region in the 2020 polls, it managed to win the presidency.

He attributed the loss of specific seats to strategic missteps, including the decision to declare election day a public holiday.

He explained that this affected voter turnout among traders in areas like Abeka Lapaz, leading to losses in constituencies such as Ablekuma Central and Tema East.

“For the parliamentary elections, we are focusing on nine constituencies where we believe we can make significant inroads,” Agorhum revealed.

He acknowledged the need to strengthen the party’s position in some 14 constituencies to prevent potential losses to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). However, he kept specific strategies confidential for competitive reasons.

Agorhum expressed confidence in the NPP’s ability to outperform the NDC in Greater Accra, citing improvements in economic conditions as a positive sign for the party’s prospects.

“From what we have seen and what we are doing, it is clear that the economy, which impacted us negatively in the past, is now showing signs of recovery,” he said.
