As Ghana prepares for the December 7 general elections, all presidential candidates have pledged to ensure peace by signing a peace pact. The ceremony, held on November 28, 2024, at the Kempinski Hotel, aimed to promote unity and stability before, during, and after the elections.

The peace pact commits the candidates to conduct their campaigns in a manner that fosters national cohesion and to accept the election results peacefully. The event was attended by key dignitaries, including Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa, National Peace Council Chairman Reverend Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, and the National Chief Imam Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu.

Reverend Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the National Peace Council, called on Ghanaians to collectively ensure free, fair, and transparent elections. He expressed hope that the peace pact would go beyond being a symbolic gesture and urged the candidates to uphold their promises, especially after the election results are declared.

Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa described the signing as a crucial step in Ghana’s democratic progress. She applauded the candidates for prioritizing national unity over personal ambitions and reaffirmed the importance of their commitment to peace.

The presidential candidates present at the peace pact ceremony included Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (NPP), John Mahama (NDC), Daniel Augustus Lartey (GCPP), Christian Kwabena Andrews (GUM), Kofi Akpaloo (LPG), Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Kumankuma (CPP), Hassan Abdulai Ayariga (APC), Mohammed Frimpong (NDP), and independent candidates Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Nana Kwame Bediako, Kofi Koranteng, and George Twum-Barima-Adu.

As the election date nears, the peace pact serves as a strong reminder of the importance of maintaining Ghana’s peace and stability.
