Labour and Employment Minister Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to its 24-hour economy policy as a substantive solution to Ghana’s employment challenges.
The statement follows the policy’s formal launch on July 3, 2025, designed to stimulate productivity through extended operational hours across key sectors.
Dr. Pelpuo characterized the initiative as a structured response to youth unemployment during a July 6 television appearance. “This policy addresses job creation through tangible economic restructuring, not symbolic measures,” he stated, dismissing characterizations of the program as generating superficial employment opportunities.
The minister confirmed intergovernmental discussions regarding overseas employment pathways but emphasized domestic job growth remains the priority. “While exploring regulated external opportunities, our primary focus is creating sustainable positions within Ghana,” Pelpuo clarified, noting implementation scenarios have undergone technical review.
Policy implementation will proceed through phased sectoral expansions, with monitoring mechanisms to track employment outcomes and productivity impacts nationwide.
