Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has called for stronger international partnerships and innovative financing mechanisms to accelerate solar energy deployment across Africa.
The Minister made the remarks while participating in the opening of the 8th Session of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly, currently underway in New Delhi, India.
Speaking in his capacity as Vice President of the ISA Africa Region, Mr. Jinapor presented the regional report on behalf of Africa, drawing attention to the continent’s vast but underutilized solar potential.
He noted that Africa possesses nearly 60 percent of the world’s best solar resources, yet attracts only 2 percent of global clean energy investment — a gap he described as both striking and unacceptable.
“This must change. We must continue to work together through stronger partnerships, innovative financing, and accelerated deployment of solar technologies to unlock Africa’s immense renewable energy potential,” Mr. Jinapor stated.
The Minister also highlighted that an estimated 600 million Africans still lack access to electricity, with the challenge being more acute in rural areas, where about 75 percent of the population lives without power.
He underscored that addressing these disparities is crucial to achieving universal energy access and driving sustainable development across the continent.
The International Solar Alliance (ISA), co-founded by India and France, brings together over 110 member countries to promote solar energy adoption, enhance energy security, and facilitate access to clean and affordable power worldwide.
