Nigerian artiste Ayra Starr has shared her experiences juggling popularity and the pressures of the music business in an interview with American singer and actress Coco Jones.
In a chat produced by Rolling Stone, the two celebrities talked about the realities of being women in the spotlight highlighting the frequent hidden difficulties associated with their professions.
Reflecting on her journey, Ayra Starr opened up about the relentless demands of her work.
“I feel like it’s always a lot,” she admitted. “People only see about 1%, but for an artist, it takes a village. It takes so much to get things done right.”
She spoke about the toll her busy schedule had on her, particularly after a busy year of performing.
“I did so many shows last year… sometimes I disappear when it gets overwhelming,” she said, acknowledging her need to retreat and recharge.
“When I go back home, I’m still living with my family. My brothers might be making noise and playing video games, so the house is still very much full,” she noted, adding that being close to her loved ones helps her cope with the pressures of fame.
Emphasizing her connection to her roots, she revealed that she seeks out Nigerian food wherever she travels as it provides a sense of comfort and happiness. Ayra also spoke about her creative journey, sharing how, despite the industry’s noise, she stays true to her artistic vision.
“I definitely listen to close people around me, but I knew what I wanted creatively,” she said. “I’ve always had the freedom to create whatever kind of music I wanted.”
