The family of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian undergraduate student who died in Latvia, has petitioned the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to intervene and push for a fresh investigation into the circumstances of his death.
In a letter dated July 20, 2025, and signed by Sarah Nyenejah Nimely on behalf of the Nimely, and William Oduro Ahyia families in Ghana and the United Arab Emirates, the family expressed deep dissatisfaction with the Latvian Police’s handling of the case.
According to the petition, investigators hastily concluded that the 23-year-old died by suicide without presenting substantial evidence. The family noted that they were denied access to key documents, including forensic reports, CCTV footage, and photo evidence from the alleged scene.
The letter also pointed out several inconsistencies in the official account. The mortuary report indicated that Nana Agyei was found fully clothed, with a scratch on his forehead but no broken bones, despite claims that he fell from a sixth-floor window.
The family further disclosed that days before his death, the young student had sent them a recorded voice message in which he alleged being poisoned by two Latvian acquaintances after consuming a drink offered to him.
Medical reports reportedly confirmed poisoning by an unknown substance, but the Latvian Police are said to have released the suspects without further inquiry.
The petition also raised concerns that access to Nana Agyei’s phone and laptop was denied, despite his habit of recording personal activities, which the family believes could hold crucial evidence.
“We are deeply dissatisfied with the handling of the investigation and believe that a more comprehensive, professional, and impartial inquiry is warranted to ascertain the true cause of death,” the family stated.
They appealed to the Foreign Affairs Ministry to engage diplomatic channels and push Latvian authorities to reopen the case, stressing that only a thorough probe can provide closure and justice.
