A fire has swept through part of the Madina Market in Accra, destroying stalls, shops and metal containers, Ghana’s National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed.

The blaze broke out in the early hours of Friday. Fire crews from the Madina station arrived at the scene within two minutes of a distress call at 01:36 GMT, with four additional engines later dispatched from Legon, Headquarters, Jubilee House and Industrial Area stations.

Several wooden structures, two corn milling shops and nine metal containers were destroyed. Firefighters managed to save a one-storey warehouse and adjoining buildings.

The fire was confined by 03:07 GMT, brought under control at 03:19 GMT and completely extinguished at 04:40 GMT.

No casualties were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The GNFS said its swift response showed its commitment to protecting lives and property.
