The Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Eastern Region has placed a two-year ban on Koforidua Senior High Technical School, New Juaben Senior High School, and New Nsutam Senior High Technical School.

This ban, announced by Eastern Regional Director of Education Ivy Asantewa Owusu, follows disturbing incidents during a recent inter-school sports event in Koforidua, including a reported gang rape and a stabbing.

The ban prohibits these schools from participating in any sporting or co-curricular activities, including quizzes, debates, and cadet programs. Each institution has also been fined GHC 500 and will be responsible for any costs related to damages or injuries. This measure aligns with the GES Code of Conduct, which condemns physical and psychological violence, as well as the Eastern Region Schools and Colleges Sports Association’s disciplinary codes.

In connection with the incidents, two underage students have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the gang rape, while a third suspect, believed to be a former student, remains at large. The police have charged the suspects with conspiracy and rape. Additionally, another student has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a peer near the sports stadium.
