President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government has allocated GH¢257 million in the 2027 budget to continue and complete the Blekusu Phase Two coastal protection project in the Volta Region.

He made the announcement at the 2026 Hogbetsotso Festival durbar in Anloga, Volta Region, on Saturday, November 7, where he addressed concerns raised by traditional leaders about the impact of coastal erosion on coastal communities.

President Mahama said the additional funding would ensure the uninterrupted continuation of Phase Two of the project, which he officially launched in July 2025.

“I am happy with the progress of work, and I wish to inform you that an additional amount of GH¢257 million has been allocated in the 2027 budget for the continuation and completion of the Blekusu Phase Two project,” he said.

He noted that coastal erosion continues to threaten homes, fishing livelihoods, schools, community facilities and places of cultural importance.

The President also announced that GH¢685 million had been allocated to commence coastal protection works under the West African Coastal Areas Resilience Investment Project (WACA).

The project will involve the construction of breakwaters, groins and revetments, as well as beach replenishment, dune protection through vegetation and the restoration of wetlands.

It will also support the rehabilitation of lagoons and watersheds, alongside livelihood programmes for young people, women and persons with disabilities in beneficiary communities.

President Mahama called on traditional leaders and residents to help protect mangroves and wetlands, warning that their destruction weakens the coastline and increases the risk of erosion.

He said protecting coastal vegetation was important to safeguarding communities and reducing the effects of coastal erosion.
