Defense Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has ruled out military deployment for today’s parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North, designating the Ghana Police Service as the exclusive security provider.
The announcement, issued hours before polls opened across 19 stations, directly addresses public concerns following electoral violence in previous years.
Boamah referenced the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election clashes and fatal incidents during 2020 general elections, urging: “Let’s learn from past experiences and prioritize citizen safety.”
He affirmed confidence in police capabilities, stating they are “trained to handle electoral security” without military support.
The directive aligns with the Electoral Commission’s pledge for a transparent process to resolve the seven-month parliamentary vacancy. Voters will choose between NPP’s Akua Afriyie and NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn, with 6,836 eligible ballots.
Boamah concluded by advocating peaceful participation under President Mahama’s administration, framing the vote as part of Ghana’s “reset” toward expanded opportunities.
