The Ghana National Fire Service has strengthened its emergency response capacity with the graduation of 1,658 new personnel following 28 weeks of intensive training at the Fire Academy in Jamestown.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak used the ceremony to announce a comprehensive insurance scheme for firefighters, including GH₵100,000 death benefits and GH₵50,000 injury coverage for line-of-duty incidents.
The newly trained cohort, comprising 843 men and 815 women, completed rigorous instruction in fire science, emergency response, and disaster management. Four recruits received special honors, including Overall Best Recruit Samuel Kenneth Ayibontey. Minister Mohammed-Mubarak highlighted ongoing challenges, noting that prank calls continue to divert critical emergency resources despite a 2.3% reduction in fire incidents nationwide this year.
This expansion of personnel and improved welfare provisions comes as Ghana seeks to modernize its fire response capabilities. The graduates will deploy across all regions, enhancing the Service’s ability to protect lives and property while conducting community fire prevention education.
