Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam made a significant announcement on Tuesday, revealing that Ghana has expanded its road network from 78,000 km to nearly 100,000 km. This substantial increase is a crucial step towards enhancing transportation and spurring economic growth.

Presenting the 2024 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament, Amin Adam underscored the government’s significant investments in road infrastructure. These include the construction of over 2,000 km of asphaltic overlay and the rehabilitation of approximately 11,674 km of roads, demonstrating the scale of the commitment.

“With about GHC10 billion invested since January 2024, our focus has been on expanding and improving the road network to unprecedented levels,” Amin Adam said.

He emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to consolidating these gains further. This commitment includes securing additional equipment to support local authorities in road maintenance and construction efforts, ensuring the continued improvement of the road network.

Under the Economic Roads Improvement Programme (ERIP), Amin Adam proposed constructing roads connecting production areas to market centres and critical tourist sites to boost economic activity nationwide.

Key projects include the long-standing Accra-Kumasi highway, the Accra-Takoradi highway, the Takoradi-Agona Nkwanta Junction, and the Tema-Afienya road, identified as critical to Ghana’s economic development.

Expanding Ghana’s road network is expected to facilitate more effortless movement of goods and people, supporting economic growth and development initiatives.
