Ghana Reinsurance Company PLC is holding the 20th edition of its Annual International Seminar, from February 22nd to 28th, 2026. The event is taking at Aqua Safari Resort a popular coastal resort destination in Ada-Foah, which is located in the eastern part of the Greater Accra Region.

This is the first time that Ghana Re is organizing both its life and non-life (general) seminars in the same place and at the same time; in past editions they were held separately.

The life insurance segment of the seminar is being held on the topic: “Shaping the Future of Life Underwriting and Claims Management: AI, Big Data and Automation.”

The resource persons handling the topic are Owaipayan Dutta and Mrs Felicia Oye Armah

The non-life segment is being held on the topic: “Advanced Property Insurance Underwriting and Claims Management” and is being handled by Dr Kwaku Appietu-Ankrah

Altogether, about 100 participants are participating in the seminar. In addition to participants from Ghana itself, others have been drawn from Gabon, Ethiopia, Sudan, Togo, Zambia, Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi, Liberia, Namibia, Kenya and Cameroun. They include insurance industry regulators, insurers, brokers and reinsurers.

Welcoming participants at the opening ceremony of the event, on Monday, February 23, Seth Aklatsi, Ghana Re’s Managing Director and Chief Executive, recalled how he has benefitted from attending previous editions of the annual seminar in the past, asserting that his participation helped in his achieving the professional career success he has accomplished.

He advised participants to listen attentively to the resource persons taking them through the various topics and take down detailed notes so that when they return to their respective organizations that selected them to attend the event, they can provide accurate, comprehensive reports as to what they have learnt through their participation.

He also suggested that they commend Ghana Re for organizing the highly beneficial seminar.

The keynote address at the opening ceremony was delivered by Dr Abiba Zakariah, Ghana’s Insurance Commissioner as the CEO of the National Insurance Commission which regulates the country’s insurance industry.

She asserted that throughout history, insurance has always risen to meet the needs of society. “Every product we design today was born out of yesterday’s challenges” she noted. “From marine trade to industrial development, from health crises to emerging technological risks, insurance has evolved in response to real human vulnerability.

It is therefore no surprise that insurance is regarded as the backbone of the economy – quietly stabilizing businesses, protecting families and enabling national development.”

Dr Zakariah warned that Africa faces one of its greatest tests through the ‘devastating and disproportionate effects of climate change” which take the form of floods, droughts, food insecurity and human displacement.

“It is time for African insurers to answer the call of inclusive insurance by developing relevant, accessible and innovative solutions that protect the most vulnerable among us” she stated, asserting that this can be achieved through training, knowledge transfer, collaboration and networking across borders.

Commending Ghana Re for sustaining international Training Programme for the past 20 years, she noted that the programmes do not only build technical competence, but create a platform for continental dialogue, shared learning and strategic partnerships as well, which can strengthen individual insurance companies and transform the industry and ultimately Africa as a whole.

Ghana Re’s Annual International Seminar is one of the flagship capacity-building initiatives in the African re-insurance and primary insurance space. It is designed to enhance technical skills in underwriting and claims management; facilitate professional networking across African and global insurance markets; and support knowledge exchange on cutting-edge industry trends and challenges.

Given Ghana Re’s position as one of West Africa’s oldest and largest reinsurers with clients across the continent, this seminar also serves as a key forum for developing best practices and reinforcing market stability.
