Ghana’s Black Stars suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria in an international friendly on Friday in Vienna, raising concerns ahead of their upcoming assignments.
The hosts made a bright start and opened the scoring through Marcel Sabitzer, who calmly converted a first-half penalty. Austria continued to dictate the tempo after the break, with Michael Gregoritsch doubling their lead in the 51st minute before Stefan Posch added a third soon after.
Ghana found it difficult to contain Austria’s attacking threat but managed a consolation goal in the 77th minute when captain Jordan Ayew finished neatly to reduce the deficit. However, the response was short-lived as Austria quickly restored their dominance. Substitute Carney Chukwuemeka struck just two minutes later to make it 4-1, before Nicolas Seiwald sealed the emphatic victory with a late goal.
The defeat highlighted defensive lapses and a lack of cohesion in Ghana’s performance, giving the technical team plenty to address before their next test.
