Beyond Sekondi’s well-known landmarks and rich history, lies an untold story surrounding a singular Almond tree many called it Duawusu in Asemensudo, a quaint suburb of Sekondi. This tree holds a special significance in the Western Region’s cultural heritage, as it is intertwined with the legacies of renowned highlife artists who hail from the area.
Historians reveal that, the Duawusu tree once served as a cherished resting spot for weary fishermen and sea workers after their arduous fishing expeditions. Under its shade, they would share tales of their adventures at sea, inspiring spontaneous compositions of rhythmic folk songs.

“Fishermen would gather round, exchanging stories of the sea’s bounty and challenges. These impromptu sessions sparked the creation of enchanting highlife melodies, infused with the rhythms of the ocean,” he recalled.
As Adamu Amadu recounts, the tree witnessed countless gatherings, where Fishermen’s tales of the sea inspired soulful lyrics, spontaneous jam sessions gave birth to timeless melodies and community bonds strengthened through shared experiences. He also expressed gratitude to Hon. Andrew Egyapa Mercer for honoring the past and present heroes who have put Sekondi in the spotlight.

This revered tree was a creative sanctuary for music legends like Papa Yankson, C.K. Mann, Jewel Ackah and others, who found inspiration in its shade. Ghanaian film maker Kwaw Ansah sheds more light.
“The tree’s story is a testament to Ghana’s rich cultural heritage. It’s a symbol of our nation’s resilience and creativity. The likes of Paapa Yankson, C.K. Mann, and Jewel Ackah drew inspiration from this sacred spot, creating timeless highlife classics that continue to resonate with us today,” he said.
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has designated the historic Duawusu tree in Sekondi as a premier tourism site in the Western Region, acknowledging its profound cultural importance.
Henry Yeleduor is the Western Regional Director of GTA. he said, “This iconic tree played a pivotal role in Ghana’s creative arts sector, inspiring legendary musicians. By integrating it into our tourism sites, we aim to preserve cultural heritage, promote tourism, and showcase Sekondi’s rich history.”
At the official commissioning of the Creative Arts Wall of Fame in Duawusu, Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts Andrew Egyapa Mercer highlighted the significance of honoring Ghana’s highlife music legends. He emphasized that showcasing these iconic musicians will not only attract more visitors to the area but also boost local revenue.
“Ghana Tourism is set to promote Duawusu as a premier tourist site in the Sekondi-Takoradi enclave. By showcasing the Wall of Fame, featuring renowned musicians whose music has made a lasting impact, we aim to attract visitors eager to experience the rich cultural heritage”.
“Our expectation is that this initiative will generate significant traffic to the area, boost local economic activities and enhance the region’s tourism profile. By promoting Duawusu, we’re not only celebrating Ghana’s musical legends but also creating opportunities for local businesses to thrive,” he said.
