English-born Ghanaian duo Kelvin Abrefa and Tyler Sackey were instrumental in Reading U-21’s 3-1 victory over West Ham U-21 in the EFL Trophy Southern Group H Round 1 on Tuesday evening.
The Royals began brightly, with Charlie Savage coming close early on, forcing a fine save from Finlay Herrick. Reading broke the deadlock when Jayden Wareham slotted home following a perfectly-timed run and pass from midfield. Ten minutes later, Abrefa doubled the lead with a composed finish, marking his first goal of the campaign.
West Ham responded just before halftime, pulling one back through a deflected effort that sneaked past goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clarke. Despite the Hammers’ pressure, Reading sealed the win in the closing stages as substitute Tyler Sackey finished off a slick team move, putting the result beyond doubt.
Reading U-21 now looks ahead to their next EFL Trophy fixture against Cheltenham Town on October 8th, hoping to build on their strong start.
