A Ghanaian doctoral student, Akpene Tetteh, has tragically lost her life after being fatally shot in Savannah, Georgia, in the United States.
Akpene, who was pursuing her PhD at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), was enrolled at the university’s School of Public Health at the time of her death.
The incident, which occurred last month, has left family, friends, and the academic community in deep mourning.
According to available information, a male teenager has been arrested in connection with the shooting and is currently in custody. Authorities are yet to determine whether the suspect will be tried as an adult.

Before her untimely death, Akpene Tetteh had begun work on her doctoral dissertation, which focused on improving health outcomes among adults living with diabetes in the United States.
Her research was expected to contribute significantly to public health knowledge and interventions in the field.
Her passing has been described as a major loss, not only to her family but also to Ghana’s academic and professional community, given her promising career and dedication to health research.
