President John Dramani Mahama has hailed the unwavering loyalty of Ghanaian football fans, noting that despite decades of heartbreak and recent competitive setbacks, the nation has continued to back the team.Speaking at a high-profile Black Stars fundraising event in Accra , the President reflected on the emotional resilience of the Ghanaian public following the team’s historical highs and lows.Central to his address was the enduring pain of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where a deliberate goal-line handball by Uruguays Luis Surez denied Ghana a historic semi-final berth.President Mahama admitted that the incident remains a “defining moment” of national history, confessing that he has “never wished him [Surez] well” since that night in Johannesburg. He described the 2010 campaign as a period where the entire nation stood still, united in a hope that came within a whisper of world glory.Since then, our Black Stars have experienced highs and lows, the disappointment of 2014, the lessons of 2022, and the sobering reality of missing AFCON 2025 for the first time in two decades. But Ghanaians have remained faithful to our stars. The event, aimed at rallying financial resources for the 2026 World Cup, saw significant domestic backing, including a $5 million pledge from Ibrahim Mahama.
