Dr. Joseph Kobla Wemakor, founder of Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG), will represent Ghana and West African civil society at a pivotal Pan-African security conference in Nairobi.
The high-level gathering, hosted by HAKI Africa at the Argyle Grand Hotel from August 18–19, 2025, aims to reshape Africa’s security frameworks around human rights.
Handpicked to deliver the welcome remarks, Dr. Wemakor brings over a decade of frontline advocacy to a conference confronting rising state restrictions across the continent.
His address, themed “The Conflict Between National Security Obligations and Human Rights in Africa,” challenges governments to prioritize dignity over control.
The event, backed by Open Society Foundations, unites activists, officials, and marginalized voices from all five African regions amid reports of disappearances, unlawful detentions, and suppressed dissent.
“His insights are essential to aligning security with human dignity,” said HAKI Africa’s Mathias Shipeta, underscoring Dr. Wemakor’s strategic role.
The Ghanaian advocate’s influence spans continents: weeks earlier, he dissected North Korea’s rights violations at a Seoul seminar, while in 2024, he spotlighted Ghana’s shrinking civic space ahead of elections.
A UN Global Entreps awardee and convener of Ghana’s 500-strong SDGs Youth Platform, Dr. Wemakor’s credentials include advisory roles on Ghana’s proposed Non-Profit Organization Bill and recognition by the World Bank.
His mission remains unwavering: “Africa’s future rests on security systems honoring transparency not mere state control.” As Nairobi looms, he prepares to forge alliances defending freedom’s core.
