A three-day training workshop on Sustainable Mining for editors and reporters selected from the Western, Greater Accra and Upper East Regions runs from December 12 -14, 2025 at Aburi in the Eastern Region.
On the theme ‘Green Mining: Best practices and responsible reporting’, it aims to enhance journalists’ capacity to report accurately and responsibly on the mining sector.
The training, organised by Ghana News Agency (GNA) with sponsorship from Association of China-Ghana Mining (ACGM) LBG, is part of its broader commitment to strengthening the media’s capacity to cover development issues with depth and insight.

Albert Owusu, General Manager-GNA, at the opening emphasised the media’s critical media in bridging the gap between mining operations and public understanding.
“Mining remains a key pillar of Ghana’s economy, providing jobs, driving investment and contributing to national development. Yet it also presents complex challenges, including environmental degradation and community displacement. As journalists, we must report objectively, highlighting both the benefits and responsibilities of resource exploitation,” he said.
“The workshop brings together experienced media professionals to deepen their understanding of sustainable mining practices, policies and technologies. Participants will engage with regulators, environmental experts and industry actors to ensure balanced and factual reporting that promotes transparency and accountability in the extractive sector,” he added.
Mr. Owusu encouraged the participants to actively engage in discussions, ask questions and share experiences that will enrich collective understanding.
Tong Defa, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, underscored the media’s critical role in strengthening transparency and fostering a better understanding of China-Ghana relations.
He urged journalists to offer a balanced view of developments rather than focusing only on negative incidents.
“There are many good things happening between China and Ghana. Otherwise, how could we maintain such a long strategic partnership?” he said.
He reiterated China’s support for Ghana’s fight against illegal mining but stressed the need to identify and prosecute the financiers behind such operations, not only operators on the ground.
