The 50th Annual Central Zone Inter-School Sports Festival opened at Mawuli School, Ho, on Wednesday with a call for discipline, teamwork and sustainable support for school sports.
The ceremony, held under the distinguished patronage of Madam Benedicta A.M. Agbezudor, Chairperson of the Central Zone Sports Association, brought together participating schools, officials and education stakeholders to mark five decades of sporting excellence.
Dr Esther Yeboah-Adzimah, Ho Municipal Education Director, said the festival represented more than a contest, describing it as “an opening of opportunity, character and destiny” for young people across the municipality.
“For fifty remarkable years, this Inter-School Sports Festival has brought students together not only to compete, but to grow,” she said. “Fifty years of discipline”. Fifty years of teamwork. Fifty years of dreams running on our various fields.”
She emphasised that sports and academics were inseparable, noting that “sports is not a distraction from learning; it is learning in motion.”
According to her, students gained focus, strategy, humility and responsibility through participation in sporting activities.
Dr Yeboah-Adzimah stated that the values developed on the track and field shaped future professionals, saying, “These are the same qualities that build doctors, engineers, teachers, entrepreneurs, public servants and national leaders.”
She highlighted research showing that student-athletes demonstrated improved concentration, time management, confidence, and academic performance. “When the body is disciplined, the mind follows,” she added.
Turning attention to sustainability, she urged partners to support the long-term survival of the festival. “If we believe sports build character and enhance academic success, then we must move from emergency fundraising to structured sustainable funding,” she said.
She called for strategic partnerships with alumni, corporate organisations, traditional authorities and community stakeholders, stressing the need to establish dedicated funding to secure future editions.
“This festival should not struggle to survive each year; it should be secured, supported and strengthened,” she noted.
To the athletes, Dr. Yeboah-Adzimah encouraged fair play and self-control.
“Compete with integrity. Win with humility and lose with dignity. Let there be no room for hooliganism or provocation,” she advised.
Madam Agbezudor, Chairperson of the Central Zone Sports Association, urged participants to remain disciplined throughout the festival. “Apart from the fun, let us all do the right thing.
May the best team win, and let us not be enemies,” she said.
She commended the organizers, schools and sponsors for sustaining the competition for half a century, expressing optimism that future editions would build on the strong foundation established over the years.
The ceremony concluded with a declaration by Dr. Yeboah-Adzimah officially opening the 50th Annual Central Zone Inter-School Sports Festival, setting in motion days of competitive sporting activities among participating schools.
